FAQs

What is the minimum age to guide at Windigo?

You must be at least 21 years old to guide in Canada, 23 in the United States.

In which country/region can I guide?

Several criteria such as your nationality, knowledge of the destinations and your language skills will influence where you will be called upon to guide.

We operate trips throughout North America, with the bulk of our volume taking place in Western Canada, Western USA, Eastern Canada, Yukon and Alaska.

What type of trips could I expect to guide?

Camping – hotel – cycling tours – high-end luxury tours – all with an outdoor component focused on hiking and wildlife viewing.

If I am hired, how long does the work period extend over?

Depending on your availability and knowledge of the destination, the season runs from April to October with the bulk of the volume between June and September.

What kind of workload should I expect for a first season?

Planning is based on availability, trip type, guide capabilities, and logistical realities. Guides who wish to do so can expect to work a full season of 60 to 90 days.

Do I need a specific driving license? If so, do I need it to apply?

Yes, you will need a driver’s license that allows you to drive vehicles that can accommodate up to 24 passengers. This may be a Class 4B, Class 4, or Class F license, depending on the province.

You don’t need to have it at the time of hiring, but you do need a clean driving record and you must obtain the license at least 1 month before the start of the season. Keep in mind that in some provinces, obtaining this class of license can take up to 12 weeks.

Do I need a first aid course to guide? If so, which one?

You need a minimum of 20 hours of first aid training including CPR level A training. For camping trips we require a minimum of 40 hours in remote areas and on some trips it is mandatory to have an 80 hour first responder.

Can you sponsor my visa to come and work in Canada?

No, you must obtain your own visa and be authorized to work in Canada or the United States to come and work for us. A working holiday visa is usually the quickest and easiest way.

Do I need a cell phone?

Absolutely! We’ll give you a fixed amount per trip to cover your business phone use.

Do I have to pay for my food?

No. Windigo will provide meal allowances during and after the trip depending on the logistics of the trip. This amount may vary from one trip to another. However, we do not cover your food expenses while you are not on tour.

Do I need to provide money to cover travel expenses?

Do I have to pay for my flight to get to the starting point of the trip?
